Hi, and welcome. HulaGames is a free browser game portal made by an independent studio in San Diego. We make games you can play on your phone or your computer straight from a link, and we tie them together with one set of points, so everything you play here counts.

This is our blog. It’s where we’ll help you get better at our games, explain the ideas behind them, and share what we’re building next. Our tagline is “Get in the loop,” and this is the easiest place to do it.

Who we are

We’re an independent studio based in San Diego. We design, build and test our own games, and we run the HulaGames site that brings them together.

We care about a few things more than anything else:

  • Play comes first. No sign-in screen, email form or age gate stands between you and a game. You can always play as a guest.
  • Phones come first. Every game is designed for a phone held in one hand, then made to work just as well on a desktop.
  • Fair rewards. Hula Points are earned by playing. They’re never bought and never cash.

What we make

Our games play in the browser, free. Right now that means five live games: a rummy-style card game, a strategy card game built on animal powers, a commercial real estate tycoon sim, a relaxing block puzzle on a tropical beach, and a blackjack card roguelite. You’ll find every one of them on the all games page, and our guide to free browser games you can play right now walks through each one.

More are in development, from a daily logic puzzle to a match-3, a sliding-car puzzle, turn-based tactics and an idle tycoon game. One upcoming empire builder is heading to iPhone. We’ll say plainly when something is coming soon, and we won’t promise dates until a game is ready.

One set of points across every game

Our hero line is “Free games. One set of points.” As you play, you earn Hula Points that land in one balance, whatever game you’re in. You also get three daily quests, a streak for showing up, badges to collect and weekly leaderboards to climb.

Points are spent on your HulaGames profile, on things like avatars and frames. They never change how a game plays. If you want the full picture, read what Hula Points are and how they work, or go straight to today’s quests.

What this blog will cover

We’re writing for people who want to play well and understand what they’re playing. Expect four kinds of posts.

  1. Guides. How to play each game, from your first move to the modes you might have missed.
  2. Strategy. Tips that make you better, from the studio that designed the rules.
  3. Learn. Explainers on the ideas behind our games: how rummy sets and runs work, what a roguelite is, how commercial real estate investors think about cap rates.
  4. Behind the scenes and news. How we design and test games, and announcements when something new is ready to play.

Every post is written to stay true and useful. If a detail changes, we’ll update the post rather than leave old information sitting around.

How we work

We plan each game in detail before we build it, get a playable version in front of people early, and test on real phones with real taps before we call anything done. If you’re curious about that process, we’ve written about how we make games, from first idea to a game running in your browser.

Say hello

We’d love to hear what you think of the games and the blog. You can reach us through the contact page on hulagames.com, and we read everything that comes in.

In the meantime, the best thing you can do is play something. Pick a game, finish a round, and check your first Hula Points. Welcome to the loop.
