Your Gang Tactics crew is three people with three clear jobs: a Gunner who hits from range, a Brawler who leads from the front, and a Doctor who keeps everyone standing. Learn what each one does best, and the battles get a lot easier.

Gang Tactics is the turn-based street strategy game we’re building at HulaGames, and it’s coming soon. The roles and numbers below come from the current battle design. They’re starting values, so expect some tuning before launch, but the job each role does is set.

The crew at a glance

Role Health Movement Aim Initiative Attack range
Gunner 10 6 tiles 70% 12 10 tiles
Brawler 14 7 tiles 55% 14 6 tiles
Doctor 8 6 tiles 60% 10 8 tiles

The Brawler has the most health, movement and Initiative, so they often act first. The Gunner has the best aim and reach. The Doctor is the most fragile, which tells you where they should stand.

Every crew member also gets 2 action points per turn and carries one Medkit per battle that restores 4 health without ending their turn.

The Gunner: steady damage from range

The Gunner is your main damage dealer at a distance. With the best aim on the crew and a 10-tile reach, they can hit targets the others can’t, and they deal 3 to 5 damage per hit.

How to play the Gunner

  • Find cover with a view. The Gunner wants to end each move behind something solid with clear sight of the street. Full cover is ideal, since it makes rival attacks much less likely to land.
  • Hunt for flanks. A flanked target gives a +15 bonus to hit. With the Gunner’s 70% aim, that’s an 85% chance, which is about as reliable as attacks get.
  • Stay out of melee range. Let the Brawler stand between the Gunner and any Thugs rushing in.

The Brawler: the front line

The Brawler is tough and quick, with 14 health and 7 tiles of movement. They can attack from range for 2 to 4 damage, but their real strength is up close.

Anyone on the crew can attack an adjacent rival in melee, but most deal only 2 to 3 damage. The Brawler deals 5 to 7. Melee also hits at a flat 90% and ignores cover, so a Brawler who reaches a rival hiding behind a crate doesn’t care about the crate at all.

How to play the Brawler

  • Use that movement. With 7 tiles per move, the Brawler can often reach a rival in cover and hit them in the same turn: move with 1 AP, melee with the other.
  • Go after rivals who are hard to hit from range. If someone is tucked behind full cover, a 90% melee attack beats a 30% long shot.
  • Be the shield. The Brawler can take more hits than anyone else. Positioning them between the rival crew and your Doctor buys time.

Melee only works on the four tiles directly next to the target, up, down, left or right. Diagonals don’t count, so plan your final step.

The Doctor: keeping the crew in the fight

The Doctor is the support role. Their own attack deals 2 to 4 damage from up to 8 tiles, but that’s not why they’re here. They’re here for Heal and Revive.

Doctor ability What it does Cost
Heal +5 health to an adjacent ally 1 AP, ends the turn
Revive Brings a downed adjacent ally back with 4 health 1 AP, ends the turn

Heal and Revive share three charges per battle, so every use counts. If a downed ally is next to the Doctor, Revive is offered first. And because moving doesn’t end a turn, the Doctor can move up and Revive in the same turn.

How to play the Doctor

  • Stay in the middle, not the front. The Doctor has the least health on the crew. Keep them behind cover and within a short move of both teammates.
  • Save charges for Revive when you can. A downed crew member is out of the battle after two of their own turns without help, or straight away if the rival crew hits them again. Getting someone back up is usually worth more than topping someone off.
  • Use your own Medkit. It doesn’t end the turn, so the Doctor can patch up and still move to help.

How the three work together

The crew works best as a little formation:

  1. Brawler forward, in cover, close enough to threaten anyone who pushes in.
  2. Gunner behind and to the side, in cover with long sightlines and a chance at flanks.
  3. Doctor in between, where one move reaches either teammate.

The Gunner softens targets from range, the Brawler finishes anyone hiding behind cover, and the Doctor stands ready to get a teammate back up.

Key takeaway: focus your attacks on one rival at a time. A rival who’s out of the fight can’t take any more turns.

Know the rival crew

You’ll face three rival types, and the right crew member for each is different:

  • Thugs close in for melee. Keep your Doctor and Gunner away from them, and let the Brawler meet them.
  • Shooters hold cover and attack from range. Flank them with the Gunner or rush them with the Brawler.
  • Enforcers are tougher and move from cover to cover. Focus them down with combined attacks.

Each battle draws three to five rivals, with at least one Shooter. Rivals favor the crew member with the lowest health or one who’s been flanked, which is one more reason to keep the Doctor safe and your crew in cover.

FAQ

How many crew members do you control in Gang Tactics?

Three: a Gunner, a Brawler and a Doctor. You lead them against a rival crew of three to five on a grid map.

Which Gang Tactics crew member is best?

None of them wins alone. The Gunner deals steady damage from range, the Brawler is the toughest and strongest up close, and the Doctor keeps the others in the fight. The crew works best as a team.

Can the Doctor bring back a downed crew member?

Yes. The Doctor can Revive an ally on an adjacent tile, bringing them back with some health. Heal and Revive share three charges per battle in the current design.

Is Gang Tactics out yet?

Not yet. Gang Tactics is coming soon to HulaGames, in your browser and built for phones first.
