Good Crazy Eights strategy comes down to three habits: keep your hand flexible, save your eights for when you need them, and watch what the other players can’t play. Get those right and you’ll go out first more often, and lose fewer points when you don’t.

The tips below fit the common rules: match the top card by suit or by rank, eights are wild and name the next suit, you draw when you can’t play, and the first to empty their hand scores the others’ cards. You can try every one of them in Crazy Eights on HulaGames, free in your browser, against up to three bots.

1. Play the card that keeps your options open

When you have more than one card you can play, look past this turn. Play the card after which the most of your hand can still follow. If you hold three clubs and one diamond, and both a club and the diamond match the pile, play a club: the pile turns to clubs and you still hold two cards that follow it. Play the diamond and you’re counting on someone else to bring back a suit you hold.

2. Hold your eights

An eight is the only card you can always play. Every eight you keep is a turn you never have to draw. Spend one when nothing else matches, when you need to change the suit away from a player about to go out, or when you’re down to your last two or three cards and want to finish.

3. But don’t hold too many

Each eight left in your hand at the end of a round counts 50 against you. If you hold two or three eights and the round is getting long, start using them, or you can lose a round you were close to winning by a lot.

4. Call the suit you can follow

After an eight, name the suit you hold the most of, not the suit of the card you’d like to play next. You want the next few turns to be easy, and a long suit gives you a card to play however the others change it.

5. Notice who draws on which suit

When a player draws instead of playing, they had nothing in that suit or rank. Remember it. Later, leading that suit, or calling it with an eight, can make them draw again. HulaGames’ suit counter under the pile helps: it shows how many of each suit you haven’t seen yet, and how many eights are still out.

6. Watch the player next to you

Your play sets up the next player’s turn. If they are down to one or two cards, try to leave them a suit they’ve already drawn on, and avoid leaving the suit they played last.

7. Drop your high cards early

Kings, queens and jacks count 10 each in someone else’s score. When two plays look equally good, play the higher card first. If you don’t go out, a hand of low cards costs you far less.

8. Count the eights

There are only four eights in the deck. Once you’ve seen two or three played, the others are less likely to change the suit on you, and you can plan a few turns ahead with more confidence.

9. Play for the game, not just the round

A round is often lost to luck, but a game to 100 or 250 rewards steady play. When you can’t go out, keeping your hand small and low on points matters as much as winning the round.

Practice at the right table

Crazy Eights on HulaGames has three tables: Easy for your first games, Medium for a fair match and Hard when you want bots that plan ahead. The first round is a short tutorial that teaches matching, eights and calling a suit. Then play a quick game to 100 or 250, pass-and-play with friends, or today’s Daily, the same deal for everyone.
