Neon Kings is an empire builder we’re making at HulaGames, and it’s coming to iPhone. The pitch is short: run businesses, recruit a crew and take over a neon coastal city.

It’s not out yet, and we’re not giving a date. This post is a short, honest look at what the Neon Kings game is, where it’s headed, and what to play in the meantime.

What is Neon Kings?

Neon Kings is an empire builder with a strategy and simulation heart. It’s set in a coastal city lit up in neon, and the game is built around three things you grow:

  • Your businesses, which are how an empire makes its money.
  • Your crew, the people you recruit to help you run it.
  • Your reach across the city, as you take over more of it.

Our tagline for it is “Build your empire under the neon.” That’s the feeling we’re after: a city at night, glowing signs, and a city that slowly becomes yours.

Why it’s coming to iPhone

Almost everything on HulaGames plays in your browser, on phone or desktop, from a link. Neon Kings is the exception. It’s heading to iPhone through the App Store instead.

That means a couple of things for you:

  1. You’ll get it from the App Store, not from a Play button on hulagames.com.
  2. iPhone is the platform we’ve announced. That’s where it’s headed.

If you’re curious why we build most of our games for the web, and why Neon Kings is a deliberate exception, we wrote about it in Browser Games vs. App Store Games.

Who’s making it

Neon Kings comes from HulaGames, the independent studio in San Diego behind CRE Tycoon, Jungle Duel and the rest of our lineup. It sits alongside two other games we’re building with a city at night in mind: Corner Boss and Gang Tactics. Each one takes a different angle, from idle tycoon to turn-based street strategy, and Neon Kings is the one about building an empire.

What we’re not saying yet

We’d rather tell you less and have all of it be true. So here’s what we’re not sharing yet:

  • A release date
  • Pricing
  • A detailed feature list

When those are settled, we’ll post them here on the blog and on the Neon Kings game page. Until then, if you read a specific claim about Neon Kings somewhere else, it didn’t come from us.

Key takeaway: Neon Kings is an empire builder for iPhone that’s coming soon. Everything beyond the pitch will come when it’s ready.

What “empire builder” means to us

An empire builder is a game about growth. You start with a little, make smart choices about where to put it, and watch it compound into a lot. The fun is in the decisions: what to build next, who to bring in, where to expand, and when to take a risk.

We think the best empire builders share a few traits. Your choices feel like they matter. The numbers are easy to read. Growth is fast enough to feel good but slow enough to feel earned. And there’s a sense of place, so your empire feels like it lives somewhere. We dig into all of that in What Makes a Great Empire Builder Game?.
